Big Goals – They are More than Just a Number

Big goals are magnets to draw us closer to what we really want. As a coach, I ask my clients this same question over and over. I never get tired of asking people about their goals because they are like a window to fulfilling your purpose, making an impact, and bringing joy.

Yet as we know, the goal itself is just a number or an aspiration. It needs more to bring it to life—whether it’s yours or for someone on your team.

When you ask advisors about their goals, follow up with these three powerful questions:

1. Who else would care if you achieved this goal?If they respond with “my customers,” probe deeper—which customers? What would it mean to their family or community? When a goal is in service to others, it becomes more meaningful—and far more motivating.

2. What do you need to get better at to achieve this goal?Continuous learning is one of the most overlooked catalysts for success. It’s also a basic human need—right at the top of Maslow’s hierarchy. Most people skip this question and risk losing momentum at the first sign of resistance. Growth fuels progress.

3. How important is this goal to you? This helps gauge the personal impact of the goal. Most people will say “very,” but go deeper:“On a scale of 1 to 10, how important is it?”If they say anything less than a 10, ask: “What would make it a 10?”That’s where the real meaning lies—and often where the goal needs a small but powerful shift.

Keep going, stay curious, and get everything you want by helping your team get what they want!
