Unique Ability: Unpacking the genius of you.
What exactly is your unique ability?
Each of us has a skill or talent that stands out from an early age. When we use it, share it, and teach it to others, the world becomes a better place.
Your unique ability pops at an early age. It is polished and perfected as you receive encouragement and see results.
According to strategic coach Dan Sullivan, most people are unaware of their unique ability because we are too close to it. He describes it this way.
"Unique Ability is what you love to do and do best.
It’s your own set of natural talents and the passion that fuels you to contribute in the ways that most motivate you.
When articulated, it describes the “you” that makes you who you are."
How to Discover Your Unique Ability
Think back to a fond moment when you accomplished something that gave you an internal sense of complete satisfaction.
I was in grade two. It was our afternoon singalong time with Mrs. Speck playing piano and my teacher, Miss Melnyk, teaching us the words. I loved the way the music and lyrics flowed together, and I did not want to miss a thing! I locked my gaze on Miss Melnyk as she conducted us like a world-class choir.
I hung on her every gesture. I hadn’t noticed that the fidgety class of eight-year-olds was in a state of complete distraction.
Miss Melnyk stopped the music. She held up her hand, which meant trouble was brewing. She scolded the littles who were not paying attention. Then, she called me out in front of the entire class.
“Watch Geraldine. She watches me as I move.
You can see her listening.”
Bam. That was it. She could see me listening. That must be a good thing. I could feel myself trying it on for size.
I wasn't trying to stand out. I was doing what came from the deepest part of my soul.
Enthusiastic listening has become a hallmark of what brings me joy. In turn, it brings peace, comfort, encouragement, and many other things to the people around me.
Sharing Your Unique Ability
In the same way, we can’t see our unique ability; we rarely think of sharing it. Mainly because we assume everyone can do it. Yet sharing it can be a powerful gift because you know “that thing you do” better than anyone else.
For example, enthusiastic listening is a muscle you can improve.
Imagine watching yourself communicate with a customer. Enthusiastic listening has a posture. It leaves clues such as a slight lean forward. Your lips move as you ask questions to gain clarity. Your eyes focus intently. Your head nods in agreement. Your head lilts with curiosity. You might describe it as mirroring the person you are with.
Oprah Winfrey once described that she could almost feel herself becoming her interviewee as she took on their posture, their intonation, and even their accent.
Now, it is your turn to unpack the genius of you.
Learning how to magnify the impact of your unique ability starts with awareness, grows with use, and multiplies when we teach others.
Points to Ponder
What is “that thing you do?”
How could you use it more often?
What would happen if you “unpacked it” and shared it with others?
What would happen if you stopped doing anything that did not leverage your unique ability?
Consider the tasks of your day and rate them on a scale of 1-10 on how much they depend on you exercising your unique ability.
Do more of the tasks you rated eight or higher.
Connect everything you do to "that thing you do."
As you ponder these questions, I can feel the spark of you becoming more of you!
